Evaluation of Household Carbon Emissions in Hamlet I and Hamlet IV of Popalia Village, Tanggetada District, Kolaka Regency

Abstract


Household carbon emissions are one of the contributors to greenhouse gas emissions generated from daily energy consumption activities. This study aims to analyze the magnitude of household carbon emissions in Hamlet I and Hamlet IV of Popalia Village, originating from electricity consumption, the use of fuel-powered vehicles, and LPG gas consumption. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method with a total sample of 222 households, consisting of 140 households in Hamlet I and 82 households in Hamlet IV. Carbon emission calculations were based on the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2006) by multiplying energy consumption activity data with the appropriate emission factors.

The results indicate that electricity consumption is the largest contributor to carbon emissions in both hamlets. In Hamlet I, carbon emissions from electricity reached 31,878 kgCO?e/month, vehicles contributed 20,817.72 kgCO?e/month, and LPG usage accounted for 3,383.23 kgCO?e/month, resulting in a total emission of 56,078.95 kgCO?e/month. Meanwhile, in Hamlet IV, emissions from electricity amounted to 13,944 kgCO?e/month, vehicles contributed 8,477.70 kgCO?e/month, and LPG usage generated 1,728.57 kgCO?e/month, with a total emission of 24,150.27 kgCO?e/month.

The average household emission in Hamlet I was 401 kgCO?e/household/month, which is categorized as high compared to the national range of 150–300 kgCO?e/household/month according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In contrast, the average emission in Hamlet IV was 295 kgCO?e/household/month, which is still classified as moderate.
